In case of an emergency, a good majority of us do not feel we could lend a hand and save a life. Around one in every four person would say they would helplessly do nothing while another person’s life is at stake. And for those who would attempt to provide first aid, the efforts are most likely to be useless, even risky, as many do not know the right first aid procedures. Here are critical numbers you need to know about first aid knowledge:
- 59% (2 out of 3 people) do not feel confident trying to help in case of an emergency situation.
- 24% (1 out of 4 people) would do nothing and simply wait for emergency response to arrive or hope that someone would who knows first aid would come.
- 39% (1 out of 3 people) would attempt to provide first aid even if they have no adequate knowledge and training.
- 28% (1 out of 3 people) say they know first aid for common emergencies but are not confident enough to help.
Anyone who is in an emergency situation needs to receive first aid right at the moment; every second is critical in ensuring the life of the person. However, despite the aggressive effort of the government and private organizations, such as the workplace approved, to educate and train more people on first aid, the current numbers remain alarming. This highlights the reality that we cannot rely on other people who know first aid. Learning first aid is a key responsibility of everyone. Completing a first aid training course offered by the workplace approved can make a difference between a life lost and a life saved.
It can take up to 8 minutes for an ambulance to arrive and provide emergency care but a loved one or friend can die in this time. It is clear that prompt proper first aid can mean life or death.
Although 98% of us acknowledge the importance of first aid in saving lives, less than 30% have adequate first aid knowledge and skills. According to studies, 50% of us would be motivated to learn first aid for the fear of being a witness to an accident, as well as emergency services not arriving on time. Interestingly, the idea of a family or significant other in an emergency situation would motivate majority of people (64%) to learn first aid. Sadly, many people realize this when it’s too late. The right time to learn first aid is NOW!
St Mark James Training is committed to train and equip everyone with the basic first aid skills through first aid training programs. These first aid courses are wide and varied, and are suited for its participants. Contact your local workplace approved chapter for more details.
